FAQs
Our answers to commonly asked questions of new scoliosis patients
How long do I have to wear a scoliosis brace? The length of time a brace should be worn is different for each individual.
I get sores on my back after wearing the brace. How can I avoid these? Sores on the skin are common with brace-wearing. They are most often caused when a shirt worn under the brace wrinkles or does not fit properly. To best prevent these sores, wear an undershirt specifically designed to be worn under a scoliosis brace. These shirts are made of stretchy fabric that prevents wrinkles. Always check with your physician, as ill-fitting braces can also cause sores.
What causes scoliosis? The causes for scoliosis are unknown. Scoliosis sometimes appears congenitally, or at birth, or idiopathically, meaning it comes on without cause.
I have never heard of scoliosis before. It must be pretty rare, right? Scoliosis actually affects about 3% of the population. It is more frequently seen in females than in males. For more information regarding the prevalence of scoliosis, view our page on Stats and Facts (also linked below)!
Is it safe to keep doing my favorite exercise (yoga, golf, etc.)? Your physician should advise as to whether you should participate in specific sports. Even if certain sports are advised against, there are scoliosis-safe activities. For example, SEAS and Schroth therapies are actually designed to help keep scoliosis from progressing. These programs include general strengthening exercises and spinal corrections. You can find more information regarding Schroth and SEAS on our Resources page.
Does bad posture cause scoliosis? The causes of scoliosis are unknown, but it is a condition of abnormal spinal growth, likely not entirely attributable to posture. You should strive to improve your posture if you have been diagnosed with scoliosis. Seek advice and assistance from your physician or therapist.
Can other people tell I am wearing a brace? My best advice is to not worry about it! I know it's easier said than done, but so what if people notice? We are all dealing with our own conditions. And if people are looking - they are probably just admiring your perfect posture in your brace! If someone asks, consider it a chance to spread awareness about scoliosis. However, if attention is bothersome, consider wearing a shirt or jacket over your brace. Some patients prefer to wear their brace visible, but for others, covering up is more comfortable.
